GREENPEACE

Greenpeace exists because this fragile earth deserves a voice. It needs solutions. It needs change. It needs action.
Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace by:

Catalysing an energy revolution to address the number one threat facing our planet: climate change.

Defending our oceans by challenging wasteful and destructive fishing, and creating a global network of marine reserves.

Protecting the world’s ancient forests and the animals, plants and people that depend on them.

Working for disarmament and peace by tackling the causes of conflict and calling for the elimination of all nuclear weapons.

Creating a toxic free future with safer alternatives to hazardous chemicals in today's products and manufacturing.

Campaining for sustainable agriculture by rejecting genetically engineered organisms, protecting biodiversity and encouraging socially responsible farming.

Greenpeace is present in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific. To maintain its independence, Greenpeace does not accept donations from governments or corporations but relies on contributions from individual supporters and foundation grants.

In pursuing our mission, we have no permanent allies or enemies. We promote open, informed debate about society's environmental choices. We use research, lobbying, and quiet diplomacy to pursue our goals, as well as high-profile, non-violent conflict to raise the level and quality of public debate.
And we believe that the struggle to preserve the future of our planet is not about us. It's about you. Greenpeace speaks for 2.8 million supporters worldwide, and encourages many millions more than that to take action every day.

 The origin of life

The universe is energy. Everything around us is matter and matter is made from atoms. They correspond to basic elements like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon, and others. An atom is a unit of matter.
Atoms form groups called molecules. Different combinations of atoms or molecules creat different kinds of matter. An oxygen molecule, for example, is made from two oxygen atoms.
There are two basic types of molecules: small molecules and macromolecules. the first ones are in non-living matter: minerals, air, water. Macromolecules are made from many small molecules. They exist in living matter: plants, animals and people. However, the macromolecules also exist in some synthetics like polythene and nylon.
Macromolecules are not living matter but they combine to create cells. Cells are basic units of life. This combination of non-living matter to form living matter is called “the miracle of life”. Some living matter like bacteria are made from one cell. Plants and animals are made from millions of cells. A cell can produce more cells. A human being comes from only one cell. It is an intelligent form of energy

Some flowers have bright colors or strong SMELLS to attract animals’ attention. Animals transport their pollen. Other flowers are small and green. Drainage improves acid soils

It is not easy to convert a wet, acid soil into a good agricultural land. The first step is to drain it. It may be ploughed, and sown with grass seeds. The main problem is to keep the land well drained in case of abundant rainfalls.

The fruit protects the seeds

The function of the fruit is to protect the seeds inside until they are ripe.
In the wallflower, the fruit is hard and dry. The seeds are very small and light, and they can be carried a short distance by the wind.
Dispersal of seeds is important, because thanks to this, plants do not compete for light, water and nutrients and they can grow properly. Dispersal also allows the plants to colonize new areas

Nitrate use must be carefully controlled

If NITRATE fertilisers are used, there is much which can be done to limit the harm they do. Fertilisers should not be applied to empty fields, only when plants are growing.
They should not be sprayed near to STREAMS and rivers. In some parts of the north, which have been designated as nitrate sensitive areas, there are strict controls to restrict farmers in their use of nitrate fertilisers, and also in the use of organic fertilizers such as manure
Some of the nitrates ARE CARRIED deep into the soil, where they find their way into water in rocks called aquifers. Water in aquifers may be extracted to use as DRINKING water. However, if people drink water containing a lot of nitrate, they may become ill

Natural and synthetic rubber

Natural rubber is obtained from rubber trees as a white liquid known as latex. This is treated with acid and dried, before being dispatched to countries all over the world. When the rubber industry DEVELOPED, rubber plantations were established in countries with a hot, humid climate, but these could not supply sufficient raw rubber to satisfy the requirements of the world.

For many years, attempts WERE MADE to produce a substitute, but they were not successful. Finally, a synthetic rubber was discovered. It is produced in FACTORIES by a complicated chemical process and it is usually CHEAPER than natural rubber.
At present,  both natural and synthetic rubber are used in large quantities.

C) Sources of energy
Nearly all energy derives from the sun, either indirectly or DIRECTLY, in the form of heat rays and light rays. Also moonlight derives from the sun. The moon can be compared to a large mirror which reflects the SUN’S LIGHT to the earth.
The light and HEAT Energy from coal derive indirectly from the sun. Coal was formed by the pressure of the rocks on vegetation which died millions of years ago. That vegetation GREW with the aid of sunlight. Carbohydrates were formed, converting solar energy into chemical energy. When coal is burned some of this energy is released.
Energy used for car engines IS DERIVED from petrol, which was also formed with the indirect aid of the sun. The remains of plants and animals WHICH died millions of years ago were pressed under the rocks in the earth. They formed petroleum, from which petrol and oil are now obtained. In conclusion, the sun is the source of nearly all energy. In the absence of the sun’s heat and light no LIFE could exist on earth.

D) Crop rotation: Explique con sus palabras el proceso
Before inorganic fertilizers were available, farmers used crop rotation to maintain the fertility of the soil.  This means growing different crops in a field each year, perhaps in a four year cycle.
Each kind of crop (cereals such as wheat, root crops such as sugar beet, legumes such as peas), takes its own particular requirements from the soil. If you grow the same crop year after year, then the particular nutrients needed by this crop are quickly removed from the soil, and you must replace them with fertilizers. If you grow different crops, however, which have different needs for nutrients, then they are not removed so rapidly. Legumes are especially useful in a crop rotation.

If a semi-permeable membrane has a dilute solution of sugar on one side and a concentrated solution of sugar on the other, a greater number of water molecules will diffuse through the membrane from the dilute solution to the concentrated one than the reverse. In effect, water diffuses from the dilute solution, through the semi-permeable membrane, into the concentrated solution. This process is known as osmosis. When both solutions on either side of the membrane are of equal concentration, osmosis ceases.
The absorption of water from the soil by the roots of plants is a good illustration of osmosis. All living organisms depend on osmosis to transport nutrients and waste materials through the cell walls. Osmosis is one of the most important phenomena, and many life processes depend on it.
